Firefighters are speaking out to raise awareness of the dangers of electrical blazes.
This week marked Electrical Fire Safety Week and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with UK charity Electrical Safety First to make sure everyone is aware of the risks some electrical appliances pose.
Domestic electrical white goods, such as dishwashers, tumble dryers, and fridge freezers are still one of the leading causes of electrical fires in England.
Last year across Dorset and Wiltshire, there were 772 reported fires in the home, and of those, 136 of these were caused by faulty electrics. The main causes of these fires are product misuse and faulty appliances or installations.
DWFRS have the following tips:
n Always buy from a reputable dealer/manufacturer and never buy second hand white goods.
n Always register your appliance with the manufacturer so you can be notified if there’s a problem. Visit www.registermyappliance.org.uk
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
If you’re concerned about an appliance in your home, use Electrical Safety First’s online product checker to see if it has been recalled.
