It’s another year, another time to recap work out what wrong and how to ensure it doesn’t happen again, does this sound familiar to you?  If so then perhaps there are a few events at the Park Community Centre that may be of benefit to us all.

On Mondays Evenings from 6.30 – 7.30 a meditation  session has now begun, it is being led by a health professional , no cost stated but donations gratefully received. One way of getting the Monday morning stress to fade away

Starting on Friday 22nd January 2016  from 1 until 2.30pm  the centre is holding a  budgeting workshop, this has  a qualified person coming into the centre for 4 weeks  to help people with their budgeting issues/problems and debt, it is being funded/led through the CAP (Christian  Against Poverty)  and is free for anyone who wishes to come along.

Slightly earlier than the budgeting workshop Frugal Foods on Fridays starts at 10.30 am if you want to help with the cooking or 12 if you just want to join in for lunch. Again this activity is free. Please be aware that on Friday 19th February there will be no Frugal Food activity as this is Half Term.

So a nice way to start and end the week at the Park Community Centre at Chelmsford Street Weymouth.

Costing a small amount the Waterside singers are always looking for additional singers to come along and join in with them, or if you don’t fancy doing this but have a small windfall put away somewhere and fancy sponsoring them, they could surely do with a little financial help. If either of these options sounds like you, call into the centre or just pop in at the Monday sessions.

Dates for February

Public Meeting February 22nd from 7pm

This meeting is for everyone and about everything that happens in the area to YOU, THE COMMUNITY.   We have invited your local and county councillors, a team from our surgery, and police and fire safety service teams.

We will have a team from the Clinical Commissioning Group who will give a presentation on how our residents can benefit from new proposals to improve their quality of life both socially and medically.

This year we will be celebrating the Queens 90th Birthday on Saturday June 11th and again plans are afoot to hold another street party. If you can remember the last street party you may recall the weather was not on our side, but luckily the committee managed to reorganise the Community Centre and everyone moved inside for a dry and fun packed afternoon. So another street party is being discussed and if you would like to become involved, take part, or even just turn up and have a seat then please do get in touch with them, perhaps the easiest way to do this would be to turn up at the meeting, as I am sure there will be a list somewhere that you can add your details to.

Community Quiz Night

The next quiz is on Saturday 20 February 2016 at 7pm, so come along and for £4.00, which includes cash prizes and a delicious buffet, join in the fun.

Saturday January 9th 2016 saw another highly successful community quiz at the Park Community Centre, Chelmsford Street. We had 48 residents turn up in 11 teams for a hugely entertaining evening  A big thanks to all who helped with the event and especially to John for organising it  and to David our quiz master. The 11 teams provided another closely fought contest with "Avenue Road" - winners, "Famous 4" - runners up and "Avengers"- mystery prize winners.

Let’s Make It

The Lets Make It Group have just launched their most ambitious project t date, they want us, the people in the community, to make 75,000 poppies by 2018. Luckily they are breaking this down to 25,000 a year and the poppies can be made from any medium/materials that suit the maker. They will also be holding  drop in workshops over the next few months starting from 8th March 1.30 – 3pm , at Weymouth Library,  at the Park community Centre every other Wednesday from 17th February 2013 between  2.30 and 4pm. With additional  support to those on Portland at St Johns Church Hall on a Wednesday morning between 10am and 12 noon where you can drop in have a cup of coffee a chat and make some nice poppies. There is a workshop on Saturday 5th March 2016 at Milton Hall, Westham Methodist Church Newstead Road, Weymouth between 3pm and 5pm, this is where you will be able to see how the poppies are made and also collect some kits.  It’s not just open to individuals, many residential homes have offered to get involved as well as Scouts Beavers Cubs and local schools.  Kits will also be available from Weymouth Library and the Dorset Volunteer centre from 8th March 2016.

The poppies will be made into an art installation that will be displayed around the Borough, As I am sure everyone does know, every single poppy made will represent 100 British service men that were killed during WW1 as over 75,000 soldiers gave their lives, if you can only make 1 poppy that 1 poppy contribution is important to the project.

If you want to talk to the group about this contact Julie on 01305 838497 or email her on jhursthouse@dorset.gov.uk

Table Tennis

The Park Community table tennis club have formed a First Division Team. John Ryan (The Captain) and Monique Chester (Team Manager) both live in the Park District and are very keen to put this team on the map and raise the profile of their community.

The Park District Team is nearing the end of their first season and are currently in second position in the Weymouth Portland and Dorchester league. There are matches yet to be played till the end of March so we are still within striking distance of winning the league. Anyone who wants to come and support us at the matches would be greatly appreciated. Our home nights are Wednesdays from 7 pm at the Park Community centre.

A great entertaining night with FREE tea, cakes and biscuits.
