A CADET from Dorchester's Air Training Corps has been appointed to a prestigious post.

Cadet Flight Sergeant George Timms. 17, has been selected to the role of Lord Lieutenant's Cadet for Dorset.

The Thomas Hardye School students is a member of the ATC's 2182 (Dorchester) Squadron and has been in the air cadets for just over four years.

He will begin his duties after an official ceremony next month.

During his time with the ATC George has participated in a range of activities including camps on RAF stations in the UK and abroad such as RAF Northolt and RAF Gibraltar as well as taking part in training courses, the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, first aid and gliding.

In June 2013 he was nominated and selected to take part in the RAF flypast for the Queen's birthday parade, Trooping of the Colour. George flew on an RAF Voyager from the number 10 Squadron from RAF Brize Norton accompanied by two Typhoons and two Tornadoes with all the other crew and aircraft also from the South West.

His commanding officer Flight Lieutenant Donnelly described George as a great example to younger cadets with an 'inspirational' leadership style.

He said: "FS Timms is an exemplary young man.

"He is keen, intelligent, alert and selfless.

"In short he represents the very best that Air Cadets produces.

"His levels of self-discipline and motivation are phenomenal.

"There are seldom events that he does not attend."

FS Timms has advanced steadily through the ranks of the ATC, reaching the role of Cadet Flight Sergeant in December last year.

George is currently studying for his A-levels and will then look to join the RAF as a weapons systems operator.

Flt Lt Donnelly said he was no doubt George would make a successful recruit.

He said: "FS Timms represents the very best that young people can aspire too.

"He is the best cadet in the best squadron in the best cadet organisation in the world."

The Air Cadets is open to anyone aged 12 to 17.
