The fine article about the sights and scenes to be found on our Jurassic Coastline (Echo, January 27) could not have been published at a better time for resorts such as our Dorset ports of West Bay, Weymouth, Swanage, Poole and Bournemouth.
Recently it was announced that the Coastal Community Trust has awarded the new operators of the motor vessel Balmoral a sum £344,000 to assist in bringing her back into coastal cruising around our shores, and create 40 jobs in the manning and management of this well known excursion vessel.
This great news was given aboard Balmoral by Mr Steven Williams MP for Bristol West, Minister for Communities in the vessel’s packed saloon, after which he sounded the ship’s horn in celebration.
On her last visit to West Bay in 2012 , 475 passengers boarded for a cruise along the Dorset and Devon coastline into Weymouth and Swanage thus observing the entire Jurassic scenery.
Balmoral will be back taking passengers again this year, this being the one of the best ways of enjoying the colours and geology of our own cliffs and bays, being able to embark from piers close to where we live.
The volunteers who have worked so hard to restore the motor vessel must be congratulated, but she will only succeed with public support. She always was a comfortable vessel to make a cruise, having ample deck space with catering and bar services.
Everybody will be able to enjoy the scenery as shown in your excellent pictorial display on the pages of last Tuesday’s edition if given the opportunity to step aboard Balmoral on her return to our shores.
