The A31 has now been reopened after a road traffic collision brought down power lines.

The road was closed between Roundhouse roundabout and Lakegates roundabout following the collision at 2.30pm yesterday, but was reopened by Dorset Police earlier this morning.

A spokesman for Dorset Police thanked motorists for their patience during the road closure.

Police were called at 2.30pm to reports of a collision and a Renault Megane on its roof at the Roundhouse roundabout.

The 19-year-old female driver, from Shillingstone, has minor injuries and was conscious and breathing at the scene.

Her car is thought to have collided with overhead power lines, bringing them down across the road. Southern Electric engineers have just arrived to fix the lines but they will have to replace the pole and the cables and are estimating it will take until at least midnight.

Dorset Police have said: "The A31 has been closed in both directions between A350 Roundhouse roundabout and the Lake Gates roundabout following a single vehicle slight injury road traffic collision.

"A Renault Megane, being driven by a woman from the Shillingstone area, has collided with a pole bringing down powers lines onto the road.

"The road remains closed to allow engineers from Southern Electric to deal with the power lines.

"The closure is expected to be in place for some time and will affect rush hour traffic.

Dorset Police is advising motorists to take alternative routes."

Dorset Traffic Police tweeted: "A31 to be closed for some time. Use Wareham Rd and A350 via Corfe Mullen or B3082/A350 via Blandford."
