A DORCHESTER schoolboy is making a splash in the world of biathlon.
Sunninghill Prep School pupil Jack Amor has been ranked fourth in Great Britain for Biathle swimming and running and he is not the only star in the family.
Sister Lily, who is ten and goes to Leweston School in Sherborne, has also had a successful season and both have qualified for the National Schools Championship at the Olympic Park in London in March next year.
Jack’s December birthday meant that despite being in Year 3 for most of the season, he was regularly competing against Year 4 and even some Year 5 pupils at the six events he took on.
But age proved no barrier to his success and he also qualified for the World Championships in Guatemala this month, although his parents decided South America was too far for him to travel.
Both Jack and Lily will be competing at the South West Regional Biathlon at Millfield School this month, even though they have already achieved sufficient points to have already qualified for the national event.
Proud mum Kelly said that the pair had already had an amazingly successful year and put it all down to hard work.
She said: “They have worked so hard for it.
“They have to put in a lot of effort themselves because the kids they are competing against around the country are all super fit. Considering it’s their first year we are so proud.
“They couldn’t do any more in our eyes.”
Both children are looking ahead and working on shooting and fencing with a view to competing in modern pentathlon when they are older and could even be Olympians of the future.
Mum Kelly said: “That’s what they are planning to do.
“They have done really well and the fencing and shooting is coming along as well.”
At Sunninghill Prep, Jack and other pupils benefit from doing at least five hours a week of sport.
The school day has been specially extended this year to allow for more sport as well as arts.
Deputy headteacher John Thorpe, who taught the Olympic medal-winning Brownlee brothers in the past, said: “We’re very privileged and proud to have such a promising athlete among our pupils.
“Jack’s an inspiring example of talent and determination.”
