• The Sutton Poyntz Village Vegetable Show was a tribute to local gardeners who produced marvellous entries despite the recent very dry weather and a good crowd turned out to witness their efforts. The entry charge not only also entitled you to vote on the many and varied exhibits but also to enjoy a cup of tea and a delicious slice of homemade cake. Although more expert on cake than vegetables I completed my voting slip just in time for the weighing of the spud in a tub competition, with the results shown on the digitally enhanced laser display blackboard. I counted eight entries (that's people, not actual potatoes, though some entries could not have been more than one large potato) To mention no names, lowest weight was Caroline Crisp with 0.31 kg, closely followed by husband John with 0.33kg. They had been hoping to have them for tea, but there wasn't even enough for one chip! Ahead of the field was Jane Walsh with 1.56kg, winning the Des Evans Trophy. She also won the 5 soft fruit and "anything grown a greenhouse" categories. Other winners were Dave Caddy - Longest runner bean, 3 tomatoes; Ian Locke - Longest cucumber; Diane Senior - Selection of herbs; Elise Potter - 3 carrots, Any other vegetable; Ros Evans - Single lettuce; Mike Haine - 3 courgettes; Joyce Faraday - 3 beans; Pat Haine - Bunch of flowers; Caroline Crisp - Bunch of different leaves. Bill Egerton thanked everyone who entered, helped or attended. Then it was over to Dave Morris, who thanked all those who had created the 20+ different scarecrows, and announced the winner of the popular vote from 160 voters as Barry White (the Knight). The competition raised over £250 and with the money from the Show over £350 will be donated to the charity Waves; a very satisfactory result for an excellent morning's friendly rivalry.

• Ian Bruce reminds me of the new free bus service that starts from Oakbury Drive every Monday and Thursday at 10.20, goes via Seven Acres (10.25), the Spice ship (10.30) and Littlemoor, arriving at Sainsbury’s at 10.55. It returns along the same route at 13.00. I haven't taken my In-house Adviser on it yet, but hope to in the near future, because she sometimes says I never take her anywhere!
