• The Environment Agency at work on the beach wall recently made me realise just how successful have been the changes they have made over the years. Except for short periods the Preston Beach Road has remained open, and there was no flooding along the Jordan in Sutton Poyntz or Fisherbridge, and the bottom of Coombe Valley Road and outside the Doctor's surgery was virtually puddle free. We should be thankful for all the improvements.

• Councillor David Mannings reports that work on the installation of pedestrian crossing islands on Preston Road at Squires Nap and the bend before Overcombe Corner will begin on 17 March. It's no good asking why the work is necessary. The money was allocated as part of the overall highway changes to the Dorchester Road by-pass and it has to be spent according to 'plan'. You might think that it could be better used to repair the road surface but I couldn't possibly comment!

• Abbeyfield Macpherson House are holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 22 March at 8 Wyke Oliver Road from 10.00 to 11.30am. Home-made cakes, Books & Bric-a-brac will be on sale together with a Raffle. Entry is only 50p for adults and that includes refreshments. There is no charge for children and everyone is welcome. Why not drop in? In addition to helping with the residents amenity fund you will also be able to see the recent improvements made to the building.

• Theresa tells me that there will be a tea party in St Andrews Church Rooms on Saturday 22 March from 3.00 to 5.00 pm. The theme of the afternoon is 'The Magic of Pantomime' with a Pantomime Fancy Dress parade, raffle and quiz. This sounds like fun for everyone, and all proceeds go to the Eve Appeal supporting research into Ovarian Cancer, so why not go along - you don't have to dress up, you can just enjoy other peoples' costumes!

• The Weymouth East Scouts and Guides Spring Jumble Sale will be on Saturday 29 March at the Scutt Hall at 2pm and they need jumble to sell to raise money. Betty Hennessey asks that you look out unwanted items and contact her (833614) or deliver them to the Scutt Hall, open most early evenings. This is one of the major fund raising activities in support of the Scutt Hall which is used by so many local youngsters, so do please try and help.
