TONNES of cigarettes, pet food and litter have hit Dorset’s beaches after the recent storms.
Dorset Waste Partnership has reported they have collected and disposed of between eight to ten tonnes of the rubbish from Chesil Beach.
They said that cigarettes, pet food, sachets of tea and packets of feta cheese and olives have been washed up along the coast including at West Bexington.
And there could be more debris on the way as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency report that a fourth container has been spotted making its way towards the coast after cargo was lost from the Svenborg Maersk last month.
The cargo was lost after the ship was hit by storms in the Bay of Biscay last month.
People are being warned not to eat the food washed up on the beaches.
Following the storms a number of community beach cleans have been organised. Next weekend (15-16) will see a public beach clean at Osmington and Ringstead, while Fleet lagoon and Chesil Beach will be the target of another beach clean on Saturday 22 March.
