• It was bound to happen! Last week I mentioned the halt in building work on the Esplanade K5 bus shelter for the No. 4 service, and suggested that, through to the power of the press, this would ensure that work restarted. Sure enough it did, and now the K5 stand is fully operational!
• Councillor David Mannings has received a number of complaints about the fly tipping in Coombe Valley Road, just past the last of the houses. He tells me that this is private land, but there are plans to have the mess removed, and DCC have made contact with the landowner to try and get the fencing reinstated.
• The Weymouth East Scouts and Guides had their beach stall on a beautiful sunny day and raised over £845! Betty Hennessy would like to thank everyone who helped, especially Simon Grant-Jones for giving up so much of his time to transport everything. Betty herself is also due a vote of thanks for her tireless work to help to keep the Scutt Hall suitable for the Scouts and Guides.
• Dorset Police recently reported that an elderly Littlemoor couple were charged £780 to have their paving slabs power washed by a ‘friendly’ man and wife, clearly a case of overcharging. A similar thing happened to a lady in Sutton Poyntz, who was actually taken to the bank by her ‘friendly’ workman so she could withdraw the cash to pay him! Please keep an eye out for rogue traders preying on elderly neighbours, and report any suspicions to the Police on 101
• The July draw of the St Andrew’s School 200 club took place in Mrs Ellis's year 6 class. Bradley Hunt drew the £50 prize for Jason Chambers, Zach Kercher helped Mrs Bennett to £30 and Millie Rooks selected Mrs Kille for the £15 prize. All the money from the monthly draw goes towards facilities for the children, so contact Helen Webb at helencwebb@fsmail.net if you would like to help.
• The Abbeyfield (Weymouth) Society is holding their Summer Fete on Saturday 20 July at Macpherson House in Wyke Oliver Road between 2pm and 5pm. There will be lots of stalls, a tombola, and cream teas available, plus a performance from Weymouth Operatic Workshop (WOW) youngsters. Entrance is just 50p and everyone is invited. All proceeds go to the residents’ amenity fund, so do drop in for a great afternoon out for a good cause.
