AWARD-WINNING Theatre 2000 is back at the Regent in Christchurch following its success with South Pacific last year.
Now they present one of the most enchanting musicals ever to grace the West End stage, Salad Days, which opened in London in 1954.
This light, bright, frothy soufflé of a musical was exactly what was needed for the grey austere years of post war Britain. In fact, it became the longest running show in British musical theatre until it was displaced by Oliver!
Salad Days proved it was just the ticket, when it also won the coveted Evening Standard award for Most Enjoyable Show.
At a time when only the favoured few went to university, Jane and Timothy wear their newly acquired gowns with pride – but what does the future hold?
The world is their oyster until they get an offer they can’t refuse from a passing tramp! He offers to pay them £7 a week (a fortune in 1954) if they will look after his mobile piano.
The magical thing about the piano is that all those who hear it have just got to get up and dance – whether they want to or not.
This is the cue for a series of comical revue-style song and dance routines that simply release the inner glee of the show.
The sugar sweet score includes We Said We Wouldn’t Look Back, I Sit In The Sun and The Time Of Our Life.
Helen Vessey and Pete Whitaker play the lead roles, Jane and Timothy, and they are supported by a host of well-known Theatre 2000 faces.
This is a delightful show that is not to be missed, so relive your Salad Days with this quintessentially English heartwarmer at the Regent Centre from Thursday to Saturday, June 2 to 4 at 7.30pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm.
