BROWNSEA Open Air Theatre – Boat – has been delighting audiences and raising money for charity for decades.

So it comes as no surprise that this highly acclaimed company of volunteers has been specially requested by the RSC to be part of their groundbreaking initiative to share skills and showcase Shakespeare to new audiences.

The hard working company had not realised that the RSC was looking for amateur groups to be involved during 2011/12.

Fortunately, Michael Dobson Professor of Shakespeare Studies at Birkbeck College, London, recommended Boat as an obvious choice and when the RSC made contact they were thrilled to be involved.

Boat chairman Don Cherrett, who is also directing this summer’s production of Julius Caesar on Brownsea Island, said: “The whole team is delighted to have the opportunity of being part of this major national programme, with its exciting mix of performances and a true celebration of Shakespeare by people who have a real passion for the greatest of all writers.”

Michael Boyd, the arts director of the RSC added: “The RSC wants to lead a step change in the relationship with the amateur sector: to recognise its rich traditions, open our doors to its work and collaborate with partners nationally to leave a significant legacy.”

Brownsea Open Air Theatre is one of the biggest theatrical projects in the South and its members perform every summer on The National Trust's Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour.

These beautiful surroundings make for a wonderful show and a fantastic evening of Shakespeare.

Since it was first established in 1964, Boat has involved more than 1,400 volunteers, entertained thousands of people and raised more than £185,000 for the National Trust.

However, there is more to the Boat experience than just the performance. The short ferry journey from Poole Harbour really sets up the evening, and sailing back to shore at night under the stars is memorable.

Patrons often go from 5:00pm and explore the island or picnic; the ticket is fully inclusive.

Boat will be performing Julius Caesar from July 27 to August 12. July 29 and August 5 have already sold out but the other nights are still available.
