WEYMOUTH Pavilion has a new stage – thanks to the people who use it most.
When the harbourside venue celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, many of the local performers who use it staged two nights of entertainment to raise money to refurbish the stage.
A total of £5,000 was raised and the money spent on replacing part of the stage flooring, which had worn out through excessive use.
The groups taking part in the event included WOW, Weymouth Drama Club, Julie Storey’s let’s dance, Weymouth Operatic Society, Weymouth Dance Studio, Pzzazz, Wey Valley School and All About Gaga.
Pavilion spokeswoman Nicky Jenkins said: “We were really pleased that so much money was raised. A lot of people did a lot of work for no money and we had a great result.
“The stage floor gets a lot of hard wear and each season it gets stripped down and repainted, but this time we felt that the middle bit of it, where it gets most use, really needed replacing.”
Julie Storey added: “We wanted the money to go straight back into the Pavilion because there is so much work that needs to be done. There is a lot of passion for the place and raising money like this for its upkeep gives performers a sense of ownership.”
More than 300 people took part in the 50th anniversary show, and souvenir programmes and DVDs are still available from 01305 783225.
