CHAMBER CONCERT, St Mary's Church, Weymouth, by JANET FERRETT

THE latest Weymouth Lunchtime Chamber Concert featured two gifted young players holding music scholarships at Bryanston School, Blandford, a school famous for its musical tradition.

Rosalie Curlett, cello, with Duncan Honeybourne, piano, began with an Elegy for cello and piano by the English composer Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988). This composer has a very distinctive style and the Elegy's tragic nature was admirably expressed by Roz's deep rich tone.

In contrast, the oboist Jonathan Moody produced the pure, clear tone that distinguishes the oboe from all other orchestral instruments. With Duncan, he played the three-movement Sonata for oboe and piano by Edmund Rubbra. The music of the two instruments is closely interwoven throughout, and the final Preston has a most beautiful rippling piano part.

Finally, Roz and Duncan played a spectacular Chopin Polonaise for cello and piano - technically demanding for both players and based on a fine gypsy type melody.

So ended a most enjoyable concert, in which all the players excelled themselves.

The next Wednesday Lunchtime Concert will take place on Wednesday, May 28 at 1pm in St Mary's Church, Weymouth. The young soprano Penelope Appleyard will include songs by Purcall and Quitter in her recital with Duncan Honeybourne.
