HMS PINAFORE Hope Church, Weymouth GILBERT and Sullivan’s comic opera has been given a bit of a new look by producer and director Geoff King in the latest offering by Weymouth Operatic Society.
The traditional show and its familiar melodies are still of course recognisable but the local company’s fresh gloss has made the good ship Pinafore sparkle more than ever.
Just as expected, there are the usual up-to-date lyrics poking fun at the town’s traffic nightmare along with sly references to iPhones and Downton Abbey but the renaming of the street seller Buttercup to DD Cup is a neat and slightly naughty additional touch.
Top of the bill were the young lovers, Ralph and Josephine, played immaculately by Patrick Sutton and Stella Brading with Alex Lyons as the ships’ captain, James Neilson as the pompous Sir Joseph Porter and Helen Pickard as DD Cup.
The small but perfectly formed trio of musicians led by Jordan Clarke kept up the lively pace and an added musical bonus was the mandolin playing of Alex Lyons in his solo piece, Fair Moon.
