Ah Jason Derulo what a smooth-voiced guilty pleasure you are.
His new album Everything is 4 is now out and features the current single Want to Want me, a mid-tempo pop hit that’s both horribly catchy and showcases his often-forgotten but remarkable vocal range.
I understand Get Ugly will be the second single – it’s another floor filler, but to be honest I found it the weakest track on the album. I’d much rather see the fantastically danceable Painkiller in the charts- the combination of Derulo’s vocals with Meghan Trainor’s sass is a major win.
Other highlights are Cheyenne and Trade Hearts with Julia Michaels and the tongue-firmly-in-cheek X2CU.
On the first two, Derulo really shows his ability to craft beautiful pop songs with heart and substance rather than rely on clichéd floor-filler territory.
He seems like a nice wholesome type, but I just wish he wouldn’t feel the need to use expletives. They seem to be liberally sprinkled about in places they really don’t need to be.
However, It’s nice to see an album by a pop artist were he gets writing credits on each song - bravo young man!
Although to my mind there is nothing on the album to rival his earlier hits ‘Ridin’ Solo’ or ‘Talk Dirty,’ there’s enough breadth and depth to make sure Derulo continues to light up the charts in 2015 and beyond.
