WITH the Olympics in town and exam results to celebrate, there was no better excuse for my partner and I to eat out.
Enzo on Weymouth Esplanade was our venue of choice.
Anticipating a busy restaurant we booked ahead and this proved a wise decision. On taking our seats it was clear that Enzo’s good reputation had already filtered into Portland ’s sailing academy.
Members of the French and Italian sailing teams were already enjoying the bustling atmosphere of this popular seafront establishment.
From the wide-ranging menu of pastas and pizzas, we had bruschette to start and I opted for a carne piccante pizza – but in a calzone style – for my main.
Calzone meant the pizza was folded in half and on presentation looked more like a giant doughy pasty than its more conventional disc shape.
My partner opted for the spaghetti carbonara.
Neither dish disappointed.
The pizza dough was soft and fluffy and concealed within the centre of the calzone the topping had been delightfully cooked.
The melted cheese and spicy pepperoni oozed from the calzone’s centre.
The carbonara’s creamy sauce and generous portion size was also a winning choice. It was good to see a restaurant not skimping on the use of cream and butter to produce a rich, filling and satisfying pasta dish.
As my partner and I sipped our wine and soaked up the Olympic atmosphere – the athletes being asked for autographs by children in the restaurant – it was clear that Enzo’s popularity is most certainly justified.
The service, food and ambience as well as looking out over Weymouth bay all made for a superb evening.
