A vulnerable 94-year-old woman had more than £100 stolen by a woman she considered a ‘trusted friend’, a court heard.
Claire Raisbeck had been employed to offer care and support to Ann Young after she suffered a broken hip 10 years ago.
Nicola Reece, prosecuting, said the pair ‘got on very well,’ and after the care ended, Ms Young employed Raisbeck to clean for her as she was a ‘trusted friend and employee.’
Ms Young has ‘serious mobility issues’ and lives with her partner near Shaftesbury.
Ms Reece said the pair noticed cash was going missing weekly between August 16, 2023, and September 6, 2023.
They had CCTV installed which captured Raisbeck stealing the money.
Raisbeck initially denied it when confronted – until the pair informed her that it was captured on CCTV. She was then dismissed from her employment.
In a victim impact statement made by Ms Young’s partner on her behalf, he said: “This has left us feeling completely betrayed. She was in a position of trust.
“It’s not our intention to shame or embarrass her.”
Raisbeck, aged 44, of Bridge Close, Gillingham, pleaded guilty to theft by an employee to a total of £140 when she appeared at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court.
Kenny Sharpe, mitigating, said Raisbeck paid back the £140 on the same day as her police interview and is "terribly ashamed" of what she has done.
He said of the theft: "Once she got away with it once, it got easier on the next situation and the next."
Magistrates issued a community order with a requirement to complete 120 hours of unpaid work. Raisbeck must also pay £85 in costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
