WEYMOUTH have moved to secure the loan signing of midfielder Tom Whelan from arch-rivals Yeovil Town.

Whelan’s arrival strengthens the Terras in midfield with the current injury absences of Andy Robinson, whose ankle injury continues to be problematic, and Cameron Murray, who is nursing shin and ankle complaints.

Whelan, 24, spent last season with former Weymouth player and manager Steve Claridge at Salisbury and in the summer earned a move to Vanarama National League side Yeovil under new boss Darren Sarll.

Signing a one-year deal with an option to extend into a second, Whelan has made six appearances, two as a substitute, scoring once for the Glovers in the 3-1 victory at Ebbsfleet.

However, Whelan has struggled to cement a regular place in Sarll’s side at Huish Park and has already completed a loan spell at Weymouth’s Vanarama National League South enemies Chippenham Town this campaign.

Whelan comes in after defender Callum Buckley terminated his contract prior to Christmas, later joining Hayes and Yeading where the left-back enjoyed a one-month loan earlier this season.
