WEYMOUTH enjoyed an up and down day on the field as they hosted their 125th Anniversary Tournament at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
The competition, set up by Terras’ player-coach Chris McPhee, featured an AFC Bournemouth under-21 XI, a Torquay United XI and AFC Totton, as well as a whole host of entertainment off the field.
In the first clash of the afternoon between Totton and Torquay, it was the former who drew first blood through a Craig Feeney penalty and went on to win the opener 1-0.
Former Dorchester Town man Sam Lanahan was in the Stags’ ranks.
The Terras then took on an AFC Bournemouth under-21 XI which included the likes of ex-Dorchester Town loanees from last season in Callum Buckley and Mason Walsh.
Chances fell for Jason Matthews’ men through striker Stewart Yetton and George Rigg, while Walsh fired wide for the Cherries during the second period after he surged between two defenders on the left flank.
Weymouth player-manager Matthews was then smartly off his line to thwart the onrushing Ben Whitfield, and the host team’s assistant-manager Tim Sills headed narrowly wide at the back post as the teams played out a goalless draw to begin their afternoon.
Facing the Gulls straight after their first clash, Weymouth’s Sills looked to find an opening for the home side as his shot looked to be heading into the net. Only to be stopped by former Yeovil Town and Terras’ gloveman Matt Cafer.
The Terras then called on Matthews to deny Torquay’s Gus Jauss, but Tevin Summerfield broke the deadlock with a cool finish and Ollie Pearce was gifted a second after a mistake as the Gulls triumphed 2-0.
Bournemouth then saw off Totton with a 3-0 win thanks to a Ben Pope brace and a Joe Quigley goal but then slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Torquay.
The day was then capped off as George Rigg’s late winner, Weymouth’s only goal of the day, saw off the Stags.
That meant that Torquay United claimed the crown and were presented with their trophy on the pitch after the final game.
