WEYMOUTH have announced plans to celebrate their 125th anniversary campaign by hosting a pre-season tournament at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday, July 18.
The event, organised by player-coach Chris McPhee, is set to feature the Terras, Torquay United and an AFC Bournemouth XI, while another club could also be added to the line-up.
Midfielder McPhee also revealed to Echosport that his intentions are to stay with Weymouth next season.
Commenting on his future, the midfielder added: “We have an offer agreed, we just need to confirm everything and just have to wait for the last little bits to be put together before I can put pen to paper.
“I have had the discussions with Jason. I am happy with my role at the club and I am just waiting to sign.
“My intention was always to stay and put right the wrongs from last season.”
Speaking about the tournament, the 32-year-old added: “With the 125th anniversary we wanted to have a tournament day rather than just a pre-season friendly.
“I put the idea towards inviting two or three clubs to take part in a mini tournament. We have confirmation from Torquay United and an AFC Bournemouth XI. Another possible fourth team could be confirmed.
“It’s obviously a big event that we want to do and, if it goes well, it could be something that has a bit of longevity.
“This has been a big process in the last two or three weeks and I have been working hard on it. We had a lot of interest.”
The round-robin tournament is set to feature games of 25 minutes each way. However, this could change to 15 minutes each way if a fourth team is added. The top two teams will lock horns in a final.
Gates on the day will open at 11am with tickets costing £10 for adults, £7 for concessions, £3 for under-16s. Parking at the ground for the event is priced at £1.
As well as the football, there will also be other entertainment to cater for all the family, as well as a possible 50/50 draw, crossbar challenge, auction for club merchandise and a raffle.
“Every year you try and set up pre-season and you want to showcase what you are about in terms of your football,” McPhee added.
“It should be a really good day and hopefully people can come down, support all the teams, and be part of a successful day.
“I am grateful for the club in trusting me to have the licence to go out and arrange something like this. It has been something completely different to what I normally do.
“The fact that they took my idea and allowed me to run with it is great and hopefully the club will do well from it.”
If anyone would like to get involved with sponsoring the tournament or volunteer to help on the day, you can contact the club on 01305 785558.
