CONCERNS have been raised about a new recycling service that could see Dorchester’s roads ‘blighted’ with bins.

The new recycle for Dorset service will start in March in Dorchester as well as other parts of West Dorset and Purbeck.

Under the new arrangements the majority of households will have to use a seven-litre kitchen caddy and a 23-litre lockable bin for their food waste, their exisiting green box for glass, a 140-litre wheelie bin for rubbish and a 240-litre wheelie bin for recycling.

Properties that cannot use wheelie bins will receive a supply of sacks for rubbish and two additional boxes for recycling.

Residents have also been given the option to pay for an additional garden waste bin.

Dorchester Town Councillor David Taylor said he had been contacted by a number of residents who have raised their concerns, especially in Arnhem Green and Colliton Street.

He said: “They are trying to work out where they are going to put the things.

“They can’t put them in their driveways because their cars are there, they can’t leave them on the pavement and there is nowhere for them to go.”

Hilary Cox, chair of the Dorset Waste Partnership joint committee, said: “The recycle for Dorset service is designed to be flexible.

“We wrote to residents in the summer, giving them a chance to contact us if there is a genuine reason why the standard service will not meet their specific needs.

“This could include having to wheel bins through their house or down steps.

“If households meet the criteria, they can receive bags and boxes instead of bins.

“The service will enable people to recycle more than ever, including food waste and plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays.

“We have designed the service to keep the number of containers to a minimum while keeping the quality of our recycling high by collecting glass and food waste separately."
