A SECTION of Sainsbury's car park in Weymouth was cordoned off as firefighters tackled a vehicle blaze.
Firefighters were called to the supermarket car park, off Mercery Road, after 4pm on Monday, March 15.
Photos from the scene show firefighters dousing a car with water after it had caught fire. The front of the vehicle appears to be severely damaged, with its interior also damaged by the fire.
A local man said he saw 'large clouds of smoke' in the car park as he entered Sainsbury's car park on Monday afternoon.
He said: "I arrived just as it had been extinguished (and I saw) large clouds of smoke.
"A cordon had already been put in place by the Sainsbury’s staff. The front end of the car was not recognisable with interior also burnt out and the bonnet appeared to need to be forced open."
A spokeswoman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 4.45pm this afternoon about a vehicle fire in Sainsbury’s car park, off Mercery Road, Weymouth.
"One crew from Weymouth attended the incident and found a small vehicle well alight on arrival.
"Two breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire – the stop came at 5.28pm."
A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: "We’re aware of an incident at our Weymouth store car park earlier this evening.
"The fire service was called and the fire was put out. Thankfully no one was hurt and our colleagues are supporting the customer involved."
