A COUNCIL has attempted to calm fears over the Weymouth Quay regeneration scheme.

As reported, Weymouth Harbour users claim they are being let down and not listened to over the project,

Several turned up at County Hall earlier this month to question councillors about what is happening with the project.

The scheme will see redundant buildings at the former ferry terminal demolished, and a new building constructed to include a new Harbour Centre of Excellence for small to medium size enterprises, and there would be buildings for a harbour office and other facilities for users.

Now Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment at Dorset Council, Cllr Ray Bryan has responded in an attempt to put fears at rest.

He said: On behalf of Dorset Council, I would like to thank everyone who has engaged with us regarding the Weymouth Quay Project.

"We are reviewing all the feedback received and will consider the views and opinions of all participants as we continue to develop the plans for the harbour.

"I’d also like to take the opportunity to provide some further information and clarification to help address issues raised by some harbour users and local businesses."

He added: "The Weymouth Quay Regeneration Project is a great opportunity for regeneration and investment into the harbour. Opportunities like this are rare, and we look forward to working together with local people, harbour users and local businesses to deliver an exciting project that will benefit both the harbour and the town."

Cllr Bryan made a number of points:

  • The Fisher Associates report is not Dorset Council strategy. The council intends to develop a new strategy for all of Dorset’s harbours and there will be significant consultation with users and businesses
  • There is no intention to make trip and charter boats permanently relocate to the proposed new pontoons, although there may be a need for them to temporarily relocate during special events (e.g. Seafood Festival)
  • The Harbours Committee will make a formal decision in February regarding whether to change the configuration of the pontoons and how best to use this space
  • There is no decision yet on how the proposed fuel facility will be managed - this will be considered by Harbours Committee in due course
  • The proposed harbourside building will house harbour facilities and the Centre of Excellence. The Centre of Excellence will lease part of the building from Dorset Council
  • The management of space between the walkway and the active working harbour needs careful consideration. We are working with the architects to accommodate the needs of all users i.e. to maximise public access whilst respecting the needs of a working harbour
