A ROAD on Portland was closed after a hybrid vehicle caught fire.
The A354 southbound was closed near to the New Star Inn at Fortuneswell yesterday evening to enable firefighters to extinguish the flames.
Fire crews were called to the scene, within the one-way system, at around 4.40pm.
A spokesperson for Portland Fire Station said: "Upon arrival extra precautions were taken while extinguishing the fire due to the vehicle being a hybrid car.
"Crews worked alongside the police to make the scene safe and arrange for the vehicle to be recovered.
"Apologies for the hold up in traffic this evening, we appreciate your patience."
The road was closed between Mallams and A354/High Street during the incident.
Traffic heading on and off the island was affected, with one passerby describing the scene as 'chaos' with traffic 'queueing back to Wyke Regis'.
