Two contestants from Weymouth have won a popular TV game show.

Claire Whiles and Marianne Littleford took home the trophy on the quiz show Pointless, although they did not win the final cash jackpot.

Claire said: “We both love the show and Marianne asked me if I would apply to go on the show with her, I never thought we would get through all the audition rounds but we did which was great.

“It was great fun though to be on the show and win the trophies.

“I am an engraver and made some trophies to take with us for all the contestants on with us and also trophies for Alexander and Richard with a picture of Marianne and I on just for fun!”

“We had such lovely, funny fellow contestants.”

The episode on which they appeared started with a science question, which asked for scientific words ending in ‘ology’.

The answers anthropology and ichthyology saw them get the best score of the first round.

In round two, contestants were required to name the teams that took part in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Regarding round two, Claire said: “I was terrible and scored 100 points with a ridiculous answer, but Marianne saved the day with an inspired answer Vanuatu which gave us a pointless answer and added £250 to the prize money pot.”

After questions on famous ‘Joans’ and two-term UK Prime Ministers in the head-to-head round, the pair made it to the jackpot round, where £1,000 was on offer if they could provide a pointless answer on the topic of TV cookery programmes.

Despite some low scores, the pair did not manage to find a winning answer, but still emerged as the victorious team of the episode.

Pointless is a quiz show where contestants must find the most obscure answers to questions possible.

Contestants can aim to win a jackpot that increases each episode if it is not taken.

Giving a ‘pointless’ answer also adds money to the jackpot.

It is hosted by Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman, whom Claire described as “very friendly and great fun.”

The show airs on BBC One at 5.15pm on weekdays.
