A SEARCH was launched in Weymouth Bay for a kitesurfer thought to be missing at sea.
The coastguard received a call shortly after 2pm today to reports a kitesurfer had potentially gone missing near Overcombe.
A spokesman from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said they were unsure as to whether the kitesurfer returned to shore and were checking the area.
A search was carried out by the coastguard helicopter, coastguard teams and Weymouth lifeboat.
A thorough search of the surf line from the Pavilion to Bowlease Cove and out to a distance of one mile and as far as Newtons Cove was carried out by the volunteer crew of the lifeboat.
Coastguard search teams checked the shoreline and the coastguard helicopter also joined in the search of the bay from the surf line out to a distance of one mile.
After a two hour search in choppy waters with nothing found all units were stood down.
Nobody was found to be in distress and the search was called off.
The inshore lifeboat returned to harbour shortly after 4pm.
