POLICE and councillors are urging vigilance after a spate of distraction burglaries in flats and retirement homes across Dorset.

Police are appealing for witnesses over a series of thefts in Corfe Mullen, Dorchester and Broadwindsor between Wednesday March 30 and Thursday March 31.

Detectives believe a white man in his 40s, measuring over six feet tall and of stocky build was responsible.

The burglar has been known to target flats and retirement accommodation, entering the main building before checking to see if any flat door is open.

When an unlocked door is found, he walks in and rifles through the victims possessions.

Usually, the victim is in another room, unaware anything is happening.

The offender approaches the victim, claiming to be a salesman and offers cleaning products from a holdall.

He asks the victim to write their name and address down so his boss knows he has been there.

Detective Sergeant Mark Shields, of Dorset Police’s Priority Crime Team, said: “I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed these incidents or has been approached in this manner to contact police on 101.

“If you find a stranger in your home in any circumstances, dial 999 immediately.

“I would also urge the public to ensure doors are locked and if you live in a block of flats please do not allow access through the main doors to anyone you do not know.

“Always ask for ID and check the validity of anyone who comes to your door. Police and trading standing advice is very simple: do not buy from door step traders.”

Three of the offences took place along Albert Road in Corfe Mullen and one at Hill View in Charminster near Dorchester on Wednesday March 30.

On Thursday March 31 a further two offences took place at Sandringham Court in Dorchester and Broadwindsor near Beaminster.

Cllr Sarah Burns, who represents the Corfe Mullen ward, said: “I am very concerned about it.

“I would urge people to be on their guard and will follow this up.”

Councillor for Charminster, Tim Yarker said: “This is particularly worrying and whilst the police are endeavouring to apprehend the thief, I would urge everybody to remain vigilant and keep outside doors locked even whilst you are on the premises.”

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police on 101 quoting 55160051049, or free call the anonymous Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
