MOTORISTS using a main road through Dorchester are facing weeks of disruption as essential gas works take place.
Mains replacement works will be taking place in Weymouth Avenue for 12 weeks from next Monday as part of a wider £450,000 project to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply to the area.
Southern Gas Networks says it has been liaising with Dorset Highways to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum, with the work scheduled to be carried out in nine separate phases.
In total more than 630 metres of metallic pipes will be replaced and temporary traffic restrictions will be in place throughout the project.
A spokesman for Southern Gas Networks added: “Parking may be restricted for short periods, but we will endeavour to make sure access is maintained wherever possible.”
The spokesman added: “This work is essential and forms part of our ongoing mains replacement programme in the area to maintain the safety and reliability of the gas supply network.
“We will be replacing the existing metal pipes with plastic (polyethylene) pipe, which has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.
“This means less long-term disruption and a safe and secure supply of gas to homes and businesses for many years to come.”
Southern Gas Networks is running a stall at Dorchester Market on Wednesday where people can find out more about the project.
