FIREFIGHTERS were called to a vehicle fire in Weymouth.

The incident occurred this morning at around 2am at Spring Grove Court, off Dorchester Road.

Upon arrival, crews found a modified Ford vehicle well alight.

The fire was extinguished by using two hose reel jets and two breathing apparatus.

Significant damage was caused to the engine compartment and passenger compartment.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Keith Honebon, who lives at Spring Grove Court, witnessed the fire.

He said: "There was lots of shouting at about 2 o'clock in the morning. I lifted the curtains up and the car was in flames.

"We phoned the fire brigade and our next door neighbour had already phoned them and he was waiting to show the fire brigade into the car park.

"The fire brigade came in, jumped out and then started putting out the fire.

"The fire wasn't going out too quickly so one of the firefighters put on breathing apparatus and went up to the back of the car and smashed the window and carried on putting the fire out."

Mr Honebon said he was grateful for his neighbours notifying the fire brigade.

"I've got Parkinson's and I was asleep.

"It was quite lucky they raised the alarm."

A spokeswoman for Dorset Police confirmed they attended the incident and met with the car owner.

She added there was no reason to believe the fire was started maliciously at this stage.
