A DESIGN from Dorchester has been chosen for the Bart’s Bash world record sailing attempt.

The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation is planning a huge world record attempt to create the 'largest sailing event in the world ever' – called Bart’s Bash.

The event aims to see hundreds of sailing clubs take part in a mass participation club race around the UK and the world.

The event on Sunday September 21 at 11am will be in memory of Dorset's Olympic gold and silver winning sailor Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, who sadly died while training with his team for the America’s Cup last year.

So far 233 clubs have signed up to take part.

Ten logos were shortlisted and after much deliberation the trustees of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation chose the design by Polly Durrant from Dorchester.

Judges felt it was ‘simple, instantly recognisable, had international reach and included elements from the Star and Finn class logos’ - both areas that Andrew was closely linked to.

The logo features the star for Star class and the wavy lines of the Finn class.

Polly said she was delighted to have been chosen.

Speaking about her win, she said: “I am genuinely delighted and honoured to have had my design chosen as the official logo for Bart's Bash.

“I was lucky enough to meet Andrew - his enthusiasm and energy were infectious. “His compassion and respect for team mates and competitors obvious - it is wonderful to see this reflected in the work of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation and The Bart Project.”

She added: “My decision to enter the competition and make this small contribution was very much inspired by the 'give it a try' ethos of the foundation, and encouraging anyone to get involved is something I am very much behind.

“By opening up this opportunity to the wider public, the foundation has captured the imagination of all ages and abilities - what better way to represent Bart than that?”

The judges paid tribute to all the entrants and said they had received many ‘wonderful and creative visions’ and were humbled by everyone’s support.
