The architecture of Poundbury has attracted plenty of interest in the past, but visitors will have a chance to view it from a whole new perspective in an exhibition.
Rowan Barnes-Murphy, a well-established artist and illustrator, has created an exhibition of drawings of Poundbury which will launch this Saturday (11).
Mr Barnes-Murphy is an artist whose work many people may have seen, though they may not know his name.
His humorous designs have been used on the cover of many children’s books, and he has produced iconic work for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the BBC, The Savoy Hotel and Moet & Chandon.
He has also been featured in newspapers and magazines across the world.
During 2017, Mr Barnes-Murphy has spent time in Poundbury working on drawings of its distinctive buildings, including the landmarks of Strathmore House and the Duchess of Cornwall inn at Queen Mother Square.
He said: “We lived in Poundbury many years ago, when it was seen as a quiet, experimental village. Returning to Poundbury, after having been a way for a while, has proved an eye-opener.
“It has changed beyond recognition, not only in size, but it has developed into a much busier place where it is clear people enjoy living and working.
“The gardens, parks and courtyards have matured, and each phase has its interesting characteristics.”
Mr Barnes-Murphy has been the recipient of many awards, including the book of the month award for Sherman the Sheep published by Simon and Schuster, and his campaign for Metacam featuring the arthritic bungee-jumping dog.
His work ranges from scratchy ink and watercolour images, to digital pictures for children and simple pen and ink drawings.
The exhibition can be seen at Gallery On The Square, Queen Mother Square, Poundbury, from Saturday November 11.
It will also display his distinctive limited edition prints of birds and animals.
